Greetings!

Welcome to the IZ Adaptive Clothing website and online store. I'd love to hear from you! This line was created to enable people who use wheelchairs a choice for clothing that they've been denied. I thought I would start with the basics, and together we'll build your wardrobe that will take you from day to night with ease, confidence and style. I've just launched some new items for Fall: Menswear and Evening wear. My intentions are to make IZ Adaptive your one stop shop for all your clothing needs, as well as get the conversation finally started about making clothes that work for you.

Let me know your thoughts. I'd love to hear about your issues with clothing, good or bad and what would make your life a little easier. I can only make this collection better by listening to you.

Re: Greetings

Izzy, I found you through the Reeve website and I'm so thankful I did. I just looked over your products, and I'm psyched to place an order am hopeful that they will fit better than typical clothing for able-bodies. I have progressive MS and while I sometimes do stand/walk w/ assistance, I spend the vast majority of my time in a sitting/lying position. I do have a couple of questions: 1-washable re: machine wash & dry unless otherwise stated? and 2-your pendant necklaces - it would be helpful to see details of the clasp or however the jewelry comes on/off. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for having adaptive clothing that has style. I am a social worker whose clients/nursing home residents appreciate this hard-to-find resource.

Re: Talk to Us

Hello Izzy, I was surprised and thrilled to discover you on an episode of City Line. I have had MS for over 27 years and am now unable to stand. Finding suitable clothing in the past 10 years has been challenging, not only because the fashion was very formfitting, elasticized clothing and extremely low rise pants, but because normal clothing was unsuitable and no one, including occupational therapists, knew what to do! I spent a year half naked and slowly started adapting my clothes myself by tearing open the seams. I looked like a rag picker wearing tattered clothing with unfinished seams, but I learned what would work for me. Thankfully I found a skillful seamstress who came to my home, however she is very expensive and not terribly interested in adapting my clothing. When I am able to, I hope to send you pictures of my "wardrobe". Looking good has always been important to me, and call it stubbornness or vanity, I refuse to wear horrible, depressing disability attire. I am going to forward your website to every healthcare professional including wheelchair sales people. There are so many people in need of your clothing.

Your thoughtfulness, kindness and caring exceed your remarkable professional expertise. Thank you, Izzy.

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Izzy/

I too have MS and cannot stand to dress. I live in leggings and I really like the trapeze dress and jersey knit to go over them...hoever, the two necklines that make me look horrid are crew and turtle...any chance of a vee neck?

The other idea that works well for those of us rolling ourselves is 3/4 sleeves...I hate having to always roll up cuffs even on jackets...Thank you Izzie for designing these clothes

Re: Talk to Us QUERY

Hi,

I am getting marries in 19 months, my sister who is my bridesmaid is in a wheelchair and i have been looking around for some wheelchair accessories to make her feel glam on the day. I was hoping to find a nice, elegant cover for her wheelchair (like wedding chair covers only for a wheelchair). do you know where I might find this?

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Catriona,

Unfortunately, I don't know where you could find something like that. Maybe a dress maker in your area can make it for you. It would not be difficult to do, if someone was able to take the appropriate measurements of the chair.

Alterations

Hi Again Izzy!

I just ordered a $#!+ load of great items online, and can't wait to try them. I was looking at your alteration options that allow one to catheterize or empty a collection devise while remaining dressed ( a longer zipper that begins in front, extending down one inseam, and the second option of a front to back zipper). I having been using a third option, and was wondering if it could be incorporated: I have a 10 or 12 inch zipper put in that starts on the right side of the inseam, extending across the crotch over to the left side, so when I am positioning myself to cath, and unzip, the material at the back of the pants lays flat in front of me on the seat of my wheelchair. I find the other two options do not allow me the best access for cathing, and I am not able to easily get the front to back zip done up again after cathing I'm sure the other options work for other gals, just not me, and if I can get pants that don't require an extra step of going to yet another seamstress, then booya for me!

By Margaret Conquest on   11/7/2010 9:00 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hello Margaret,

Yes, I can do this alteration for you. As I understand your request, you would like the zipper starting at your right leg inseam, going up to the crotch point, then down the left leg inseam. Please confirm. You can add this to your shopping cart as Alteration #1, and I will do it as you have requested to your pant order.

Thanks! Izzy and Team

Re: Talk to Us

Hi, Please advise if wool neck funnel coat is a fall or winter coat?

By muriel on   11/15/2010 9:20 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Muriel,

Yes, all the wool coats are suitable for winter. They have a flannel backed satin lining for more warmth than regular lining. They are not Parka's or down filled, but will keep you warm, with normal layering under the coat.

Thanks! Izzy and Team

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Izzy,
Is your line available in any retail stores? I never have any luck with online purchases - I need to see and feel the items to determine if they are suitable for my elderly mother. I am thinking of the lined wool cape for her but am not sure if it is really what I am looking for. Also, not sure of sizing for her.
Thanks,
Sharon

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Sharon,

The line is currently not available retail, but we are working on changing that. In the meantime, a meeting can be arranged if you live in the Toronto area. If this is possible, contact us to make arrangements.

Thanks,

Questions about jacket sizes

I have measured just like the video have shown, but I have a questions:
1. Do I need to ad size for because the jacket will be going over the clothes?
2. Do I need to measure from the neck to the bottom of my chair so you know how long my back is since the jacket will be cut there?
3. Also my sizing veries from a medium at my hips to a waist is XL which size should I go with?

By Jessica on   12/2/2010 8:07 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hello Jessica

1) Depends what you plan on putting under your jackets, if it's a blouse or fine fitted sweater, you don't have to go to the next size, if you plan on wearing something more bulky, then yes, go up one size.
2) No, you don't need to measure the back length, as that is a standard size which is used.
3) It depends on which item you are purchasing. Please email me your waist and hip measurements as well as which item or items you are thinking of purchasing, and I can advise you what what size to order.

Hope that helps.

Re: Talk to Us

i'm super excited to find this site! i'm 33 and have been a paraplegic for 13 years. i love fashion and its taken a long to time to finally find what works for me in the mainstream fashion world. but i've never really been happy. until this line, i wore the jeans and i won't wear anything others! the elastic and how higher works in the back. i don't have plumbers crack anymore!:) thanks izzy! you changed my life! finally someone has thought of fashion for us young women who care about this aesthetics but are completely ignored!:)

Re: Talk to Us

I love all of your jackets and once I'm done with this I'm going to order one of your suit jackets. I have just one gripe... I think the rise on your pants may be a little high for my liking. I usually wear my (able-bodied) jeans right above the top of my butt so they are just above my supra-pubic catheter in the front. Do you have any plans to make any pants or jeans that are ultra-low like that?

By Samantha on   12/26/2010 7:02 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Samantha,
Thank you for your note. You've got a point about the rise in the pant, at the front. I will include lower rise pant's in my Spring 2011 offerings. As I move forward with IZ Adaptive, there are so many different issues that need to be addressed... so I'm doing my absolute best to listen and deliver... so long as the need is there.
Thanks again, and take care,
Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Izzy,
I really like my wool swing coat and am getting lots of use out of it. I love that it sits flat while sitting without any bulk. I was wondering if it would be possible to have the same or similar coat made in a winter fibre-fill kind of fabric that could go into the wash. Would you let me know?

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Izzy!

As the mother of a young adult with Spina Bifida, I thank you so much for what you are doing! I had always hoped someone would craft clothing that didn't look like something out of a retirement community for people with disabilities. I don't have the talent for clothing design, or I would have done it myself years ago! I will be sure to show my daughter your site, especially the special occasion dresses. Getting my daughter a prom dress last year was a nightmare! On a business note, I'm starting a website for persons with disabilities, as well. I would love to have you on our site in some way. You can reach me at the email address I've provided above.

Best of luck to you in your endeavors!

Re: Talk to Us

Dear Izzy,
Please make men's pants that will stay on when transferring back and forth from wheelchair. I don't know a quad that does not have problems keeping their pants on when transferring. I have tryed the pants that are higher in the back they still come off. I think our large bellys present the problem. I played quad rugby for years and all the C-5,6,7s had the same problem. Thank you.

Thanks again, and good luck with your site! and best wishes to your daughter.

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your email and comments on raise back pants. I have not yet had one person who has had a problem with our pants. Our pants are drafted differently. They are not just raised in the back, but, the entire pitch of the pants has been created from and for a seated position. Also, as much as we try to please everyone, we can't. These pants may work on many but not all. Thank you again for your comments, and take good care,

Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

hey izzy, i was ecited to find your line on the net. i've modified clothing over the years. i see that paras are covered but we quads are a hore of a different color. with no effort we evolve with what's termed the "quad belly" and little chest. it's a look only a quadriplegic can pull off well. sorry, i'm a motivational speaker and humorist. i digress. will you be creating a line for those with more prominent of tummies? thanks for your work, much, success, and if you ever need a speaker let me know. peace, matt lorton

By matt on   2/9/2011 5:03 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Matt
Thanks for your email. My first job for someone in a chair was for a quad. I'm well aware of "quad belly"... thats why all my tops are cut in an "A" shape to accommodate that thicker waistline. Pants also have an elastic at the back for organs settling throughout the day. Alterations can be made to the clothing to make dressing easier, as shown in our alterations afferings. So, I have most certainly tried to help my quad friends with their dressing needs. Please feel free to suggest anything I might be over looking... I'm always happy and open to receive comments.
Thank you again, and take care,

Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

Hello ...

I remember checking your website awhile back and seeing wrist/lower arm warmers. Looked alot like a glove with no fingers? Sound familiar? And I was wondering how warm your wool blend coat is? I use a scooter when out and about and am looking for a dress up coat for special outings (theatre, dinner) but warmth is important. Thanks.

Colleen

By Colleen on   2/17/2011 1:12 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Colleen,
Yes we still have "Sleeve Guards", they can be found in the accessories section. Our 100% Wool fabric is warmer than our wool blend fabric. Its a tighter weave. We also line all our coats in a flannel backed satin lining, which also helps keep you warm. Since our coats are more "dress up coats" they will keep you warm, but not as warm as a down filled Parka. Wearing a scarf around your neck and layering if possible, will help keep you from feeling cold while you are out and about.

Thanks and take care,
Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

Some more comments about difficulties for quads. I'm one. Firstly let me say after more 40 years of frustration, it's really exciting and impressive that you're tackling the problem.
In relation to pants slipping down, I remember main stream men's trousers once had a rubberised band built into the inside of the wasteband. That increased friction to avoid the shirt coming out. I don't see this nowadays but it may be worth investigating. I've never used them but 'braces' might help for formal wear when a jacket is worn.
I find the pull-tab on zippers are too small for me to grip with ease. Using a generous sized pull-tab would be good.
I can't manage the button gat the wastband. Using a hook-and-eye device would be better.
Thanks and well done

Re: Good stuff!

Hi Izzy. Came across your site via Metromorning on CBC. Great idea and I wish you and your team much success!

A random idea here - I spend my days sitting in the office more or less all day long. It seems that even some folks who are not in wheelchairs could make use of your adaptive designs. Any thoughts to making suits / office wear?

Cheers!
Richard

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Izzy--I just heard about your new store and existing website on CBC's Metro Morning show and couldn't wait to get here! Unfortunately, I am beyond your size range, so all your lovely designs won't fit me, which is disappointing. I have severe (bone-on-bone) arthritis in my knees and, while I can walk short distances, I use a mobility scooter to get around and to commute to work. I also have recently had open-heart surgery.

I have been "making do" with plus-size clothes, but most of these are designed on the premise that the wearer is mobile. Some of the strategies I have used in the past, such as double-headed zippers and elastic waist pants work, but they tend to only be available on sportier plus sizes, so I am always under-dressed for work (unless it's casual Friday). Have you thought of making larger women's sizes?

By Nancy on   5/16/2011 11:36 AM

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the note.... glad you caught the piece on CBC this morning. I have had other people comment on those of us who sit all day at our jobs.... the difference is when you do stand up, my clothes won't look right.. they work on a seated frame and are designed to work and look right on that frame. I could wrap my head around the issue though, as more and more of us are sitting all day long in front of a computer.

Thanks for your comments and take care,

Izzy

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for taking a look at the site. My size range goes up to 22. If that does not work for you, please come and visit the store and we can customize pieces for you. Most of my clients have been 'making do' with clothes they get, but I understand the challenges of how to make it work.

Please give us a call and we can help you out.

Hi Izzy,
Your sight was advertised on facebook and I was online at the right time and came across it!! WOW! I have forever been looking for clothing for my little sister she has MS and is no longer in a wheel chair but an inclined chair and your clothes are exactly what I have been searching for, for years...
I was wondering since she is living in extended care and her clothing is washed by the hospital and their laundry machines, are these clothes durable; Can they withstand high heat; And harsher washing chemicals? If so I think I have found what we have been searching for for so long...
The styles are lovely and classic, she would really like them.
Funny enough one of her favorite sayings used to be "Don't worry be happy..."!
Thank-you

Returns

Hi Izzy,

I am very excited to learn about your store as I think it is something that we could definately use. I am a wheelchair user in Saskatchewan and am wondering what your policy is on returns. Do you accept returns and if so is the person responsible for shipping costs? What are your rules on this? I will definately try to stop by your store if I ever make it to the Toronto area but for right now I am not sure when and if that will happen. Please let me know.

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Megan
Thanks for your note. Yes, we do take returns. We have a size chart that you should refer to when placing an order to help ensure you're ordering the right size. Shipping costs are determined by the destination, weight and size of your order, which the customer pays. We ship through Canada Post. You can also choose the level of service you want, which will determine the cost of shipping and how quickly you'll receive it.

Thanks and we look forward to serving you.

I love your clothes! I'm excited that you have evening wear as my son is getting married next summer. Is there any canace you'll be designing a dressy jumpsuit type outfit between now and then?

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Abby

Thanks for your excitement about our line of clothing ! We love it too ! Congratulations to your son on his wedding plans. You are the second person that has asked about a jumpsuit... so its something that I should consider. I will definitely keep it in mind.

Thanks again for reaching out to us and take good care,

Re: Talk to Us

I am so excited to find this website! I am in a wheelchair and am very petite. Finding clothes that are not a struggle to put on and that fit properly is almost impossible. Even your size 4 is too big! Would I order a size 4 and list my measurements?

By Carol on   9/8/2011 6:51 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Carol,

So glad you found us ! and happy your excited about our offerings. Yes, place your order, then send us an email with your measurements and we'll figure out what will work best for you. If we need to make major adjustments, we will need to add alteration charges, which is generally 20% of the cost of the item (could be more or less depending on what needs adjusting and what is ordered). You could let us know what you'd like to order before hand, and we'll let you know what measurements we would need you to take and send to us. You can send us an email to let us know what you are interested in.

Thanks again and take good care,
Izzy

color swatch

Would it be possible to get a piece of the purple fabric you use in your evening dress? I am pretty sure I want to order a dress in that color but I want to see it and also get my future daughter in law's approval.

Thanks!

Re: Talk to Us

Re: Talk to Us

How do I tell whether the clothes are high back or waist length? I am interested in the tweed jacket specifically, but would like to know this in general for future shopping. Thanks

Re: Talk to Us - I first posted under Handipeep - very 1st question, but did not see an answer.

Hi, First posted on July 28th, under 'handipeep', but didn't see a reply, so I'm trying again w/ same questions:

Izzy, I found you through the Reeve website and I'm so thankful I did. I just looked over your products, and I'm psyched to place an order am hopeful that they will fit better than typical clothing for able-bodies. I have progressive MS and while I sometimes do stand/walk w/ assistance, I spend the vast majority of my time in a sitting/lying position.

I do have a couple of questions: 1-washable re: machine wash & dry unless otherwise stated? and 2-your pendant necklaces - it would be helpful to see details of the clasp or however the jewelry comes on/off.

Additional question re: length of hosiery, etc.- I am tall (5'101/2") - the largest in the hosiery seems like it would be too short, as it is lumped in w/ 5'2" - 5'10 sizes. Do you have any alternative thigh-high hosiery for us tall women? If not i hope you will consider adding tall sizes for women.

Keep up the great work.

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Donna,

Most of our backs are shown with full backs. To have a separating back, it can be purchased from our alterations page. Therefore, each and every item has the option of being a high or low back. It takes more time to create the high separating back, so that is why its an added on feature and it does cost a bit more. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call us.
Thanks and take care,

Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

Hello K. Carlisle
My apologies for not replying to your comment... not sure how that happened.
Most of our items are machine washable with the exception of the pieces that are lined or made from leather. In the future we will add the fabric content and care to each description. Many people contact us with inquiries about fabric and we often send our clients swatches to help them make their choice on colour.
If you look at the 'Rose Pendant', you will see a photo of the back closure that we use.
With our hosiery, that size range is all that's available in this item. If you order a larger size than you are, it will help in the length as well. Instead of utilizing the width, it will go to the length if the hose are a size larger.
Thanks for your inquiry and take care,
Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

Hi K. Carlisle
I've addressed your question in my previous answer. We will begin to add content and care to our shopping page, to help our clients make their choices. In the meantime, please feel free to email or contact us with any specific questions you may have. We can let you know content and care on any of our items.

Thanks so much,

Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Izzy, Wow I'm a late comer to this website. However, very nice to be able to accommodate comfortable styles for disabled customers. I do realize being adaptative fitting, extra expetise is place for wheelchair fitting. My concern is what about budget for those on fixed income? I am a single parent with two children in college. I am very involved with them, church, and community. Do you have clearance sales at any time? Also, I love white basic cotton blouses. I hope constructive criticisms are welcomed. But I wasn't to fond of the wide seamlike on your basic white blouse. The color black yes maybe even a purple would be good. But a simple white with bust darts or slimline look thru waist area. Thanks for taking time out.

Re: Talk to Us

Hello Diane
Welcome to the site. Yes, putting this collection together has taken a lot of time, experience, effort and money. Everything is made in Canada when purchased so pricing is as low as I can go, with all items made to order. I can definitely appreciate and understand being on a budget, fixed incomes and other financial concerns. Everything comes with a price and trying to make this business work is costly with labour, rent, R & D etc. My means are quite limited too, but I'm doing my best to make this all work. So far, I haven't had a clearance sale as we don't work as other retailers do. I have no problem with constructive criticism. Everyone does, however, have their own likes and dislikes. I often find what works for one person, may not work for another...especially to the seated client where needs, body types, likes and dislikes can be vastly different.
Thanks Diane and take good care,

Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

I can't believe how nice your clothing line is. I don't want to wear "grandma" clothes or hoes. I loved everything. Prices are a little high but, wow, I loved so much of your line. It's about time "we" can look fashionable. Thank you so much!

By Frances McDonald on   1/16/2012 1:11 PM

Re: Talk to Us

Hello Frances,

Thank you for your comments, they are very much appreciated. The prices are as low as we can go as we build this line of clothing. We also produce in house and not overseas for now, which also reflects in our pricing.

We truly love working on this line and love how it affects our clients. Thank you for kind words.

Take care,

Izzy

Re: Talk to Us

I am more than likely going to attend the Total Wedding Show on the 22 of January... Will you by any chance be at that show or any other wedding show in the GTA in the next little while?? I will be making a trip to come see you sometime soon anyways (trying to figure out how it will work best for me) but if you are going to a wedding show then that would be a bonus...Thanks...and Happy 2012!!!!

By Cora on   1/22/2012 11:08 AM

Re: Talk to Us

Hi Cora,

We will not be attending the Wedding Show unfortunately. Since wedding dresses is not the fore front of our business, its not financially viable for us to attend these events. However, I'm sure it will give you some great ideas if you're in the market for a wedding dress. We would love to help you out if you need. Our wedding dresses have been working out very well for people who are 'seated' and need to look sleek and sexy with no extra bulk of fabric surrounding them.... not to mention comfortable throughout such a hectic and special day.

Take care,
Izzy

Thank you

Hi Izzy - I am so thankful I found your website through the Reeve Foundation. I am a coach of two sled hockey teams as well as the girlfriend of man who has been in a charge for the last 5 years from a motorcycle accident. I have found over the years how difficult it is to find nice clothes that work for people in wheelchairs. I was wondering if you ever considered doing a shirt that has some sort of rubber covering for the lower arms on a long sleeve. I know it might sound crazy, but I can't buy him nice clothes unless it is black due to the fact that the aluminum on the wheels have wrecked all the light colored dress shirts and jackets. As he wheels around, the aluminum residue not only gets on his hands but on his clothes and that does not come out. I avoid all white and light colors because of this. Thanks again for your designs!

Re: Talk to Us

Hi CaroleThanks for your note and suggestion. Yes, getting clothes and hands dirty are a common issue. You've raised a good idea. The hard part is finding the right fabric or material for the solution. Whatever it is, needs to be washable. I have an item called Sleeve Guards which help protect your coats or any sleeve from this problem. You can wash the sleeve guards and keep your clothes clean. I will definitely put my thinking cap on for this. Again, thank you for your note and hope that we can be of service to you.Take care,Izzy
